Fishing
the lower Laguna Madre
Fishing the
lower Laguna Madre is one of the most exciting fishing trips anywhere.
The best saltwater flats fishing on the Texas Gulf coast. This
hyper-saline, coastal embayment is the largest in the U.S. It
encompasses approximately 230sq. miles of sea grass flats. With
its immense clear, shallow water flats and huge sea grass habitat,
it creates prime feeding grounds for speckled trout, red fish,
flounder, countless shore birds & waterfowl.
The sub-tropical climate of this area allows us to catch fish
year-round. The most consistent months being April-October
The lower Laguna Madre lends itself to countless days of sight
casting. Stalking fish on super shallow flats, by means of skiff
poling, is really the ultimate challenge
Fly fishing - Sight casting
to red fish& trout will be our main focus. You will be poled
in foot 1/2 or less of water, while we scan the water for any
abnormal movement. You can expect to see tailing & backing
fish, singles, doubles & small groups of 6-8 fish, and sometimes
a herd. As the sun rises higher, you will then be able to distinguish
the actual body of the fish. The challenge comes, when face( with
placing the fly in a 'dinner plate' sized area, then stripping
the fly to evoke a strike by the fish. This trip is very challenging
& fun....accuracy is golden!
Ultralight, long rod, spin
- As with fly fishing, this will be 95% sight casting. You'll
be utilizing a 8 1/2 - 10ft, slow - moderate action, specialized
spin rod, coupled with 41b IGF A line. In many ways, this ultralight
approach is just as challenging as fly fishing.
Plug Fishing - This is
a 'bass style' approach to fishing for red fish& trout. Exclusively
utilizing 6lb test line & 6-7 1/2 ft super light, fast action
rods, using mostly top water lures with some plastic baits.
If you like the idea of taking the lighter approach to shallow
water angling, then you will enjoy my offering in a guided fishing
trip. . Although more challenging, you will find it to be a sporting
& rewarding experience.
. SWA Guide Service uses only artificial lures and flies, and
supplies its customers with high
quality light tackle & fly fishing equipment.
. To allow for a more personalized trip, all fishing trips are
based on 1- 2 anglers.
. Beginners welcome, casting lessons available, personalized trips.
. Fishing times may be altered to accommodate your travel plans,
weather, tides... etc
. Tides play a major role in where fish will be, and in some cases
how they will act. We will vary:
our approach from day to day, to maximize our time on the water.
